Fungal Conservation: Services

Why Fungi?

Fungi are vital to the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and human health but have often been excluded from conservation assessments, planning, and actions. We now know that many Fungi face similar threats to extinction as plants and animals. In 2025, out of the 169,400 total assessed taxa on the IUCN Red List, 1302 are Fungi. Despite this, fungal assessments are quickly growing. The 1302 assessed taxa are more than 40 times the number assessed only 10 years ago.
